This Month I’m Reading: “Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out Of Your Head And Into Your Life”
Over the weekend, I read this self-help book with an unusual title. My Scribd App has been flashing the tile in my recommended book section, but I never take the time even to check the summary to see what the book was about because its title would not give it the chance to be on my reading list.
Hence, I was looking to take a break from my studying for my upcoming SHRM exam and wanted to shift my mind (or instead refresh it) by reading something aside from my study materials.
I went back to my Scribd App and looked at the top-of-the-chart list for the week. The book with the unusual title –which I will cite later- pops again as one of the Top 10 on my reading chart.
Komago-as we would say in Haitian Creole. I keep wondering why this book keeps popping up everywhere I go. I finally decided to give a quick read by glancing over the summary.
I move from reading the summary to reading the entire book in exactly one weekend.
The introduction itself caught my attention as the writer introduced the book with some personal anecdotes and common mistakes we make in the name of “I will take care of that later” or “If I do this for this person, I expect to get that in return” or “I can never do this.” I appreciate how he presented all excuses we tend to give ourselves merely because we want to get ahead, but we do not want to put in the necessary actions to get ahead.
See below the quotes that resonate to me the most from the book “Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and into Your Life” by Gary John Bishop. I genuinely hope these quotes resonate with you or your current situation as well. As a reminder, do not ever judge the book by its cover –or in my case, by the title. Real talk.
“It starts with you and ends with you. No one can make you willing, and you cannot move forward until you really are willing to make the next move.”
“We only see the highlight reels of others’ lives while being continually reminded of our own behind the scenes.”
“Often the reason you can’t see the solution is because you’re too close to the problem. Zoom out a little, zoom out a LOT…”
“How will you get ahead in your career if you’re always holding on to certainty and comfort? You won’t. Success is never certain. It never comes without risk. Even if you’re the smartest or the hardest working, there’s no guarantee of anything.”
“You are not your thoughts. You are not defined by what’s inside your head. You are what you do. Your actions.”
“Don’t expect victory or defeat. Plan for victory, learn from defeat.”
“And every time you think you “can’t” stop, that’s just another excuse. You can. You can, and you will. Stop buying yourself off. Stop letting your internal condition dominate the quality of your life. Take back the wheel.”
“Start taking the actions to propel you forward.”
“It’s this simple: in order to improve your internal world, you have to start by taking action in the external world. Get out of your mind, and get out into your life.”
“You could be the smartest person in the world, but that doesn’t mean a thing if you never take action to make an impact to better your world.”
Merci beaucoup Micaëlle, très beau travail. 🙏🏽
