Tell us about Manba, and where does the name come from?
Manba is the Haitian Creole word for peanut butter. The word is often spelled Mamba, the phonetic version of the word. To honor Haiti and the Haitian inspired recipe, we felt that Manba was the name to choose. We added dD (Dumornay Delis) to personalize the brand, so we call it dD Manba.
Who are the people behind the brand?
Stanley Dumornay, born in the USA, grew up in Haiti, lives in Montreal, Canada. Jason Delis, Canadian, born in Montreal. We met at HEC while working on our MBA in 2013-2014.
What sparked the interest in launching this product?
On a trip to Haiti in 2014, Stan introduced me to spicy Haitian peanut butter, and I loved the taste instantly. Upon returning to Montreal, we did a market study in Montreal and noticed that spicy Haitian inspired peanut butter was not available. That was the spark we needed to launch dD Manba.
What are some of the challenges experienced from the early stages of launching?
Distribution, cost of ingredients, convincing store managers to buy our spicy peanut butter.
